Cleaning Checklist Template: Every Version You Actually Need

Free Printable Home

There is no single cleaning checklist template, because a daily list, a move-out list and a roommate split are different documents with different jobs. Downloading the wrong one is why most people print a checklist once and never look at it again.

Seven templates below, written out in full. Print the page, or copy the one you need.

Which one you need

Template Use it when Format
Daily You want the house to stay level, not get cleaner 5–7 items, same every day
Weekly by day You clean a bit each day One block per weekday
Monthly rotation The jobs that are too big for a week One per week, four per month
Quarterly / seasonal Twice or four times a year Room by room, long
Move-out Getting a deposit back Room by room, inspection order
Small apartment Under about 700 sq ft One page, whole place
Roommate split Two or more adults, no hierarchy By area with names

1. Daily template

The rule for a daily list: it fits on one line each and takes under fifteen minutes total. If it does not, it is a weekly list wearing a daily label.

Done Task
Make the bed
Kitchen counters cleared and wiped
Sink empty; dishwasher started or emptied
One load of laundry moved forward one step
Ten-minute reset of the main room
Bathroom sink and mirror wiped
Floor swept where you eat

2. Weekly template, by day

Day Focus Done
Monday Kitchen — appliances, cabinet fronts, floor
Tuesday Bathrooms — all surfaces, toilets, floors
Wednesday Bedrooms — linen, dust, vacuum
Thursday Living areas — dust, vacuum, reset
Friday Laundry and entry
Saturday One monthly rotation task
Sunday Rest

The room-by-room detail underneath each of these is in the weekly cleaning checklist by room.

3. Monthly rotation template

One task per week, four per month, twelve rotations a year. This is where the jobs go that make people feel behind — they are not weekly jobs and they never were.

Week Task Month done
1 Baseboards, one zone
2 Inside the fridge, top to bottom
3 Interior doors, frames and switch plates
4 Ceiling fans and light fixtures

Alternate months can swap in: oven, shower grout, trash cans washed, under the beds, one closet, the car. Keep four per month and no more.

4. Quarterly and seasonal template

Season Focus Done
Spring Full deep clean, windows, closets swapped
Summer Outdoor spaces, garage, dryer vent
Autumn Full deep clean, furnace filter, gutters
Winter Pantry and freezer inventory, paperwork

Every quarter also gets four fixed safety items: smoke alarm batteries, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher date, and the water filter. Four minutes, four times a year.

The full room-by-room version of the spring and autumn entries is the deep cleaning house checklist.

5. Move-out template

Written in the order a landlord or inspector walks the property. Deposits are usually lost on four things: the oven, the shower, the walls and the floors.

Area Must do Done
Whole property Everything removed, including the trash and anything in storage
Walls Nail holes filled, marks removed, touch-up paint if permitted
Windows Glass, sills, tracks, blinds
Kitchen Oven interior and racks, range hood filter, behind and under appliances
Kitchen Every cabinet and drawer emptied and wiped inside
Fridge Emptied, washed, defrosted, left on or off per the lease
Bathroom Grout, shower door, limescale, extractor fan cover
Floors Carpets professionally cleaned if the lease says so — keep the receipt
Fixtures All light bulbs working, vents dusted, filters replaced
Final Photograph every room, dated, before you hand over the keys

The photographs are the most important line on this list. They cost nothing and they settle almost every deposit dispute.

6. Small apartment template

Under about 700 square feet, splitting by day is overkill. The whole place fits in one block.

Frequency Tasks
Daily, 10 min Dishes, counters, one reset of the main room
Weekly, 60 min Bathroom fully, kitchen fully, all floors, bed linen, laundry
Monthly, 45 min Fridge, one cabinet zone, baseboards, windows, under the bed
Twice a year Deep clean, closet swap, everything moved

One hour a week keeps a small apartment genuinely clean, which is the compensation for having nowhere to put anything.

7. Roommate split template

Fill in names once and leave it on the fridge. Rotate monthly if you must, but fixed ownership causes fewer arguments than rotation does.

Area Owner Frequency Last done
Kitchen surfaces and floor   Weekly
Bathroom   Weekly
Living room   Weekly
Trash and recycling out   Twice weekly
Hallway, stairs, entry   Every 2 weeks
Supplies restocked   Monthly

Two rules that make shared lists work: dishes are always same-day and personal, never on the chart; and the "last done" column exists so nobody has to be the person who reminds everyone.

Building your own

If none of these fit, four columns cover every cleaning checklist ever made: task, where, how often, who. Add a done box and nothing else. Every over-designed template is those four columns plus decoration.

Two build rules. Write tasks as actions with an end point — "wipe the stovetop," not "kitchen." And cap a daily list at seven lines; anything longer stops being read and becomes wallpaper.

Print it once, laminate it

The reason printable checklists fail is reprinting. Laminate the daily and weekly ones, use a dry-erase marker, and wipe them on Sunday night. One print, years of use, and it survives being stuck inside a cabinet door in a kitchen.

If you would rather tear a sheet off than wipe a card, a pad on the fridge works better for a household where several people need to see it — our daily to-do pad and the home management set are sized for that.

Start with the daily one

Copy the seven lines from template one onto a card today. Everything else on this page is optional until the daily list is running, because a weekly plan on top of an unmanaged daily baseline never holds.
