An e-reader case is about the size of a paperback cover, which means there is room for three or four stickers and no room for a mistake. Most regret comes from the same place: the first sticker went dead center, and everything after had to work around it.
This is the order that avoids that.
Decide on case or device first
Put stickers on the case, not the e-reader. A case can be replaced for a few dollars and the stickers go with it; the back of the device is curved at the edges, and you will want it clean if you ever trade it in. Clear cases give you a second option: stickers on the inside face, protected from your bag.
Pick three, not ten
On a surface this small, three stickers read as a collection and seven read as clutter. A combination that works nearly every time:
- One with words. The statement piece. Go Away I'm Reading was made for exactly this.
- One round or compact shape. Something to balance the lettering: Coffee and Chapters, a 3-inch round with a coffee cup on a stack of books.
- One that is not about books at all. A goose, a ghost, a verse. It keeps the case from looking like a uniform. Coquette Goose and Ghost Coffee both sit well next to bookish lettering.
Lay them out before you peel anything
- Clean the case and let it dry.
- Set all three stickers on it with their backing still on.
- Put the largest in a corner or along one edge, not the middle. Angle it slightly; a five-degree tilt hides the fact that nothing is perfectly straight.
- Place the second so it overlaps the first by a few millimeters or sits clearly apart. Nearly touching is the one spacing that looks like an accident.
- Take a photo. Look at the photo, not the case. Problems show up in a photo that you cannot see at reading distance.
- Peel and stick from largest to smallest.
Leave a gap on purpose
Keep one corner empty. You will find another sticker you love within a month, and a case with no space left is the reason people peel things off and tear them.
If you would rather track books than decorate
Some readers want a record more than a look. A tear-off sheet per book does that without a full journal: the 5x7 Book Review Notepad has room for the title, a rating and what you thought. There is more on formats in what a reading journal is and how to start one.
