Most witchy planner setups have a shelf life of about five weeks. They go up at the end of September, they are all pumpkins and bats, and by the second week of November they look like decorations nobody took down.
The version that lasts all year is built on moons, stars and a dark palette, with the Halloween pieces added on top for October and removed after. Here is how to split it.
The year-round base: three colors and the night sky
Pick three colors and hold to them: black, a deep purple and one metallic (silver or holographic). Then use motifs that are not tied to a date.
- Washi: Moon and Star Holographic Foil Washi Tape along the top of a weekly spread. One strip is enough.
- Discs: if your planner is disc-bound, Silver Crescent Moon Planner Discs change the whole look of the spine without touching a page.
- A pocket: the Moon and Stars Vellum Pocket holds loose stickers and receipts and shows what is inside.
- One statement sticker: Crafty Witch, black gothic lettering with a crescent moon and stars. It reads as witchy in March as easily as in October, and it is the one for anyone whose craft room is the real altar.
That is the whole base. Four pieces, no pumpkins, nothing to take down.
The October layer
From late September through Halloween, add the seasonal pieces on top of the base instead of replacing it:
- Witchy Halloween Planner Sticker Sheet — hand-drawn spell books, cauldrons, candles and pumpkins for the weekly boxes.
- Witchy Halloween Vellum Pocket — a seasonal pocket for the stickers you have not used yet.
- Witchy Halloween die-cut sticker — purple lettering under a black witch hat, for the dashboard.
- Purple Ghost Witch Notepad — a 5x7 pad for October lists that you would otherwise write on the back of an envelope.
On November 1, the sticker sheet and the pocket go back in a drawer and the base is still there. There are more October layouts in Halloween planner kit ideas.
A weekly spread, start to finish
- Run one strip of moon washi across the top of the two pages.
- Write the week's dates in black. Leave the day boxes plain.
- Add one small sticker per day at most, and only on days with something in them. Empty days stay empty.
- Put the statement sticker on the dashboard or divider, not the spread. It is the thing you see when the planner opens, and the weekly pages stay writable.
- Stop. A dark palette looks heavy fast, and white space is what keeps it readable.
Three mistakes that make it look like a costume
- Orange. The moment orange enters, the setup has a date on it. Save it for the October layer.
- Covering the writing space. If you cannot fit a dentist appointment in the box, the planner has stopped being a planner.
- Matching everything. One set of matching pieces looks bought. A moon washi, a different star pocket and a lettered sticker look collected.
Building it for less
Without the discs, the base comes to about $10. If you want a few die-cut stickers to rotate through the year, any five come to 20% off at checkout, or the Build Your Own Die Cut Sticker Pack gives you five designs for $13.
