Short answer: Put the divider before the pages it labels. When you turn to “Budget,” you should see the Budget divider first, then the budget pages behind it. The divider acts like the cover of that section, not its last page.
The simplest page order
Think of each section as a tiny book:
- Budget divider or tab
- Budget overview
- Monthly budget and expense pages
- Next divider (for example, Meals)
- Meal-planning pages
That order works in ring binders and disc-bound planners. If you are using adhesive tabs stuck directly to a page instead of a full divider, attach the tab to the first page of that section. The goal is the same: the label should lead you into the content.
Why some binders look “backward”
There is no universal rule for which side of a divider should hold a pocket. A pocket can face the section it serves or face the pages before it. Choose based on what you need to reach: a pocket for this month's receipts usually faces the budget pages; an “inbox” pocket for loose papers often belongs at the very front. What matters is consistency, so you can find things without thinking.
Also, tabs can sit at staggered heights along the outside edge. That is different from page order. A staggered set lets you see every label at once; each divider still goes before its own pages.
A quick setup check
Close the planner, grab a tab, and open to it. If the labeled pages are immediately on the right, your order is intuitive. If you see the end of the previous section, move the divider one position forward. For a left-handed setup or a planner you browse from the back, the reverse may feel better—use the arrangement you can navigate fastest.
Make the sections useful, not crowded
